Biography

Marc Piano is a member of the Digital Assets, Investment Funds, Corporate, and Regulatory teams in our Cayman Islands office. He is also admitted to practice in the BVI. Active in the digital assets space for almost a decade, Marc has extensive expertise and experience in advising on blockchain technology and virtual assets projects which include some of the world’s largest and most recognised projects. Marc Piano is a member of the Digital Assets, Investment Funds, Corporate, and Regulatory teams in our Cayman Islands office. He is also admitted to practice in the BVI.

Active in the digital assets space for almost a decade, Marc has extensive expertise and experience in advising on blockchain technology and virtual assets projects which include some of the world’s largest and most recognised projects. He has presented and delivered training around the world to lawyers, advised regulators and interested parties on the topic, has extensive experience in relation to virtual asset project structuring, regulation and general legal considerations, co-hosts the “Piano Lessons” podcast series with Phil Graham and regularly publishes notes and thought leadership pieces on the space generally and legal and regulatory developments.

Marc’s digital asset work involves complex corporate structuring and advice, legal and regulatory analysis and advice, the governance nexus between DAOs and corporate structures, executing on often novel transactions, and drafting commercial agreements and terms. He also horizon scans for and anticipates the implications of future relevant legal and regulatory developments at global standard-setting level and local implementation. His clients include numerous DAOs, regulated virtual asset service providers, layer 1 and layer 2 protocols, web3 projects, NFT and digital asset marketplaces, metaverse platforms and token issuers.

He regularly advises on all aspects of the set-up, operation, and closure of investment funds including matters related to corporate governance, regulatory compliance and the automatic exchange of tax information.

Marc joined us as an associate in 2020 having previously worked as a fintech, corporate/M&A and finance specialist at Fox Williams in London and at Bedell Cristin in Guernsey prior to that.

He co-authored the first, second, and third editions of the Law Society’s report “Blockchain: Legal and Regulatory Guidance”, focusing on smart contracts, Stablecoins, CBDCs, and DAOs.
