Biography

James Petkovic is a partner in our Litigation & Insolvency team in the British Virgin Islands office. He has over a decade of experience in commercial litigation, with a practice that includes fraud, oil and gas, and banking disputes as well as a range of other commercial matters including contractual and restitutionary disputes. James also has extensive experience in international arbitration, having acted in multi-billion dollar ad hoc oil and gas proceedings administered by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague. James Petkovic is a partner in our Litigation & Insolvency team in the British Virgin Islands office. He has over a decade of experience in commercial litigation, with a practice that includes fraud, oil and gas, and banking disputes as well as a range of other commercial matters including contractual and restitutionary disputes. James also has extensive experience in international arbitration, having acted in multi-billion dollar ad hoc oil and gas proceedings administered by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague.

Prior to joining Harneys in 2023, James practised as a barrister at One Essex Court in London where he retains a tenancy and acted on multiple high-value commercial disputes.

James appears regularly before the BVI Court and has obtained orders including freezing orders, orders pertaining to the convening and sanctioning for schemes of arrangement and winding up orders. He has also worked on a range of high value matters while offshore including pertaining to enforcement, fraud proceedings and challenging an adjudication notice in liquidation proceedings.

James also writes and publishes regularly including co-authoring chapter 17 of Kluwer’s recently published “Expedited International Arbitration: Policies, Rules and Procedures” on expedited arbitration in the offshore space and an article on ESG litigation on Practical Law: "Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Litigation Risk for Lenders" - PLC Article (2022).
