On 14 October 2019, the European Council adopted a framework for restrictive measures, targeting people or entities deemed responsible for human rights violations or abuses, or for the repression of civil society and democratic opposition in Nicaragua, in addition to undermining democracy and the rule of law in Nicaragua.
The restrictive measures, involving travel bans and asset freezes, aim at addressing the Council’s increasing concerns regarding human rights and democratic governance in Nicaragua. The Council has warned that specific designation will follow.
