Natalie and Johime’s Hyrox experience in Hong Kong: a journey of grit and perseverance
The training
Training for Hyrox is crucial for preparation. However due to work, travel and family commitments, we did not train as much as we hoped for. Nevertheless, we attended classes at gyms with workouts which were demanding and designed to build both strength and endurance. Preparation also involved a lot of running given that it consists of half the race.
The event day: A test of endurance
On the event day, the atmosphere was charged with adrenaline and good vibes. A DJ played EDM/dance tunes – it was a music festival but for fitness. From the 150kg sled pushes to the 1km rowing, every exercise was a battle against fatigue and a test of willpower. The support from fellow competitors, spectators and the organisers was overwhelming, creating a sense of camaraderie unique to Hyrox.
The finish line
Crossing the finish line was a moment of profound achievement. The culmination of a short but intense period of training materialized in our instant of triumph. Despite the physical strain to complete each station followed by immediate runs, there was an immense sense of relief and pride when we finally reached the end of the last station of wall balls (a rep consisting of throwing and catching a medicine ball against what can be described as the backboard of a basketball net to be followed with a deep squat).
The power of community
The support from our family, friends and the broader fitness community was the backbone of our journey. Their encouragement was a constant source of motivation, reminding us that while the challenge was personal, the journey is shared.
